Self-discovery: How does 'I Know' become the biggest barrier?

Self-discovery: Admitting to not knowing something puts one in a space of humility and openness, and Self-discovery mode which enables us to listen, consider and adopt views and ideas which may not inherently be our own or even familiar to us.

This does not mean we do not take pride in our expertise or subject matter. Rather, what it means is to stay open to possibilities beyond what we know.

Self-discovery: Collaboration is a winner for solving larger organizational challenges.

Collaboration

We all read a lot of literature about teamwork and are taught from a young age, what we are not taught is how to learn from the other teams. Though I see a lot of competitor insight information in the last decade or so, collaborative insights are still developing.

The journey of self-discovery is the path to understanding our true potential.

The power of collaboration and diverse viewpoints creating magic is something I have learned the value of. Not every challenge needs a larger team effort, but when an issue impacts more than just one department, collaborating will lead you to winning solutions.

So, have you discovered the power of “I Don’t Know” yet?

“I know that I know nothing” – Socrates

I know that I know nothing. The quote of Socrates is an opened door to think and analyze. Think about yourself; deeply and honestly. What do you know? Do you know everything? Are they perfect? Have you ever felt that you are nothing?

I remember a Zen story, which tells how ego puts obstacles to knowledge. A professor visited the monastery to know about Zen. The Zen master was serving tea while discussing. The master was pouring tea into the cup.

In self-discovery, we find the key to unlocking our own inner wisdom.” – Ralph Waldo

Tea reached to the brim, and then master kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing and he could not control his feeling. “Oh, look! It’s overflowing. You can’t pour in more”. The professor was confused. “Yes! You are like this teacup”, the monk said, “How can I teach you Zen knowledge unless you empty your cup?”

We all saw a different world in 2021. As a result, we suffered, learned, unlearned, and relearned in our professional and personal lives.

Personally, I lost many of my close ones during the pandemic, but this pandemic helped me find myself.

2021 gave me the courage to face my fears and act on my realizations. I was able to break my boundaries and develop a new version of myself.

The more we delve into self-discovery, the more we uncover the depths of our authentic selves.

As Charles Cooley, an American Sociologist, said, “I am not who you think I am; I am not who I think I am; I am who I think you think I am.” So 2021 helped me get out of my perception about myself and the perception of others about me.

I had been practicing Mindfulness for the last 3-4 years; however, last year was the year of action on the learning of Mindfulness. Hence, I decided to note my thoughts that I had in certain moments of 2021 that changed my approach towards life which I am sharing in this edition of my blog post.

My Journey.

Constantly losing on things negatively impacts your confidence, and so does consistently winning because confidence is not about winning all the time; it’s about how much you are comfortable with losing.

For example, if I am confident about my skills and competencies, work approach, and hard work, I know that I will overcome any obstacle. Knowing that you can get up no matter how hard life hits you is the confidence.

The maximum time we spend during the problem-solving process is finding the solution, but the trick is to find the right problem first. Unfortunately, we often rush to get a solution irrespective of whether the problem in hand is correct or not.

Remember, solving the wrong problem is still a problem; hence spend maximum time identifying the right problem first. I have always believed that finding the right answer is important but asking the right question is more important!

Money is a significant motivator for what you do, but it is not enough. It loses its motivation over time. The purpose is what motivates us throughout our careers. The purpose is what gets you out of bed every morning.

In the pursuit of self-discovery, we find the courage to confront our fears and embrace our strengths.

The work you do has to have a meaning. The feeling of being part of something larger than yourself gives you the motivation to achieve the outcomes.

Do not run after perfection. Perfection is overrated. If you want to complete anything successfully, you only need to do one thing, and that’s starting! And learn & improvise along the way.

I cannot expect my team to work as hard as I do. They should not tell me why they are not performing; I should be the one to explain to them why they should perform.

Freedom comes with accountability. Either you have both or none!

Growth is not possible in the comfort zone. Either you can have 10 years of experience by trying multiple things or 1 year of experience repeated 10 times by doing the same thing repeatedly, every year.

Stop overworking! It’s not about how many hours you have worked. It’s about how much value you have added. I cannot call myself successful if I cannot give my time to my family.

Being consistent is more important than being a perfectionist.

My Realization! Things I Realized.

Stop over thinking! You can’t change what has happened; you can’t control what might happen. You can only prepare for what might happen and respond to what just happened. Hence, focus on your preparations and responses.

Disconnect yourself from the emotions you have before trying something and perceive good and bad by how you feel after completing it.

Stop pretending to be happy when you are not. Stop wasting time in one-sided relationships. Stop compromising with your boundaries just to please others. Stop justifying your actions to people and arguing with them. Stop comparing yourself with others.

Loving others is important but loving yourself is more important! Hearing the other person is important, but understanding the other person is more important! Positivity is important, but acceptance of negativity is more important! Taking control of the situation is important but taking control of yourself is more important! Being happy is important but not waiting for others to make you happy is more important!

It’s possible to be emotional and detached at the same time.

Changing our attitude has very little to do with us and more to do with our environment. Change the environment around you, change the routine, change the habits, and it will change your attitude.

Nobody thinks about your mistakes as much as you do. So stop over thinking and start doing.

The opposite of love is not fear; it’s indifference! Avoid hating anyone or anything; it makes you toxic.

Remember, whatever you have achieved in life is because you deserved it, and if you can accomplish what you have, you can achieve a lot more!

With this thought, I wish you great years ahead, Keep achieving your goals and smiling!
